Gahwetna: A Sweet Qatari Treat

After our gastronomic exploration at JWALA RESTAURANT in Medina Centrale, we just move to the other side of the block and checked out another café recommendation in the area.

An old souq ambiance with walls embellished with traditional Qatari paintings, brass kettles, and lamps on the ceiling. Its small interior space was well complemented by extensions at the outdoor sidewalk – that’s perfect for cool weather while sipping your favorite hot karak and enjoying the scenery.

The café was full when we came so I really couldn’t get a good vantage point to take a good shot of the place as many of the customers were local. We waited for few minutes and we got seated on one corner where we were immediately welcomed by their super attentive waiting staff.

We knew that we badly needed some recommendations so we depended on the most popular desserts on Instagram. As much as we want to try out the more local ones, we decided to give it a chance on our next visit with friends. We also noticed that their menu is mostly tradition and some with modern twist.

CAKE AL SAOO
Chocolate cake stuffed with Nutella, served with vanilla ice cream
SHAKE SHACK
Ice cream milkshake with saffron and cardamom

Indeed, it is fascinating to discover dishes apart from our comfort foods. In Qatar, it is even very seldom to see a local-Qatari café, so it was a double treat to actually have the experience.

GAHWETNA CAFÉ is located beside Megapolis Entertainment Center in Medina Centrale – The Pearl Qatar. You may either park at the back of NOVO Cinema or the closest would be at Spinneys. They are open from 8:00am to 12:00midnight.
