What awaits QATAR after FIFA World Cup 2022?

Indeed, the FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022 is the biggest thing that could ever happen to this tiny but oil rich nation… at least for this season. But don’t fret because the fun continues with more and more exciting events coming up in the next few years for QATAR.

Here are some of the next big attractions to watch out for:

Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix 2023

Formula One (F1) drivers will race in Qatar’s Grand Prix for a second time per an announcement released on 20th September 2022 by the FIA organization. Read full article here.

Qatar’s return to the race track will be historic as Formula 1 will host 24 races for the first time in history. 

The longest season of F1 will begin in Bahrain on 5th March and span over eight months ending a the Abu Dhabi race track on the 26th of November. 

Absent from this year’s season because of World Cup preparations, Qatar’s circuit will light up on 8th October 2023 at the Lusail International Circuit as part of a 10-year deal with Formula 1.

Expo 2023 Doha, Qatar

The International Horticultural Exhibition EXPO 2023 will be hosted by the State of Qatar from 2nd October 2023 – 28th March 2024. Under the theme “Green Desert, Better Environment”, the Expo will address the challenges that hot desert countries face in the field of desertification and sustainability, and will constitute a new opportunity for the development of agriculture and greening cities in Qatar and the Middle East region.

AFC Asian Cup 2023

Defending champions Qatar will host the Asian Cup for the third time in their history – in 1988, 2011, and 2023 as announced on 17th October 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Asian Cup is held every four years. Qatar won the tournament’s last edition, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates in 2019.

Qatar will stage the next Asian Cup in place of original hosts China who relinquished the rights this year as it pursued a zero-COVID policy. The tournament is likely to be moved from mid-2023 to early 2024 to avoid the heat of the Gulf summer. AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024

Qatar has been selected as the host for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Competitions Committee at its fifth meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 30th September 2022.

The AFC U-23 Asian Cup is a biennial international age-restricted football championship organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the men’s under-23 national teams of Asia.

Asian Games 2030

Doha will host the Olympic Council of Asia’s 21st Asian Games in 2030 after it won the highest number of votes in a secret ballot of the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees in Muscat. The voting took place on the sidelines of the 39th OCA General Assembly on 16th December 2020.

Chinese city Hangzhou had been selected to host the next Games in 2022, with the 2026 edition scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Doha will host the 2030 Asian Games, while Riyadh was chosen to host the 2034 edition.

Doha hosted the 15th Asian Games in 2006, with the participation of the 45 member states of the Olympic Council of Asia. A total of 423 competitions were organized across 39 sports.

Reports also said that a lot of its infrastructure and urban developments have been connected to the staging of the World Cup and also other sporting events too like the World Athletics Championships in 2019. It is crucial for Qatar to deliver and host other mega events and hosting the 2030 Asian Games could help propel Qatar towards a possible bid to host an Olympic Games. (Read the full report here)
